Food Insecurity Rages On Under the Pandemic
More than 50 million people living in America, including 17 million children, will experience hunger as 2020 comes to a close, an increase of nearly 50 percent over last year. Greater Boston Food Bank provided about a million pounds of food each week before the pandemic, but now distributes 2.5 million pounds of food weekly, and food banks across the state are seeing an increased demand without a subsequent rise in donations. The need is great across Massachusetts; Weymouth has seen the greatest increase in need in the country, with a projected 168 percent rise in child hunger since 2018. Read more here.

Where to Give
Two Days Left of the Cambridge Challenge Against Hunger
Cambridge friends, one in eight of our neighbors is experiencing hunger and food insecurity, and while our food pantries are fighting to keep food on the table, they can’t do it alone. This holiday season, give the gift of food security by supporting food access organizations and the Cambridge Challenge Against Hunger with a generous donation that helps over 15,000 of your neighbors, residents, and friends in Cambridge. With a gift of just $100, you can feed four families on Food For Free’s Home Delivery program, and help bring a new meaning to the ‘season of giving.’ If you would like to donate, click here. Transition House in Need of Emergency Donations
Transition House’s mission is to break the cycle of domestic violence in our community. In its first decades, Transition House created the first shelter on the East Coast, a legal services program for battered women, a foster grandparent program, and pioneered school-based teen dating violence intervention curricula and programs. Learn more here.
Today, Transition House provides vital housing options for individuals and families surviving domestic and intimate partner violence in Cambridge. With a 40% increase in emergency housing as a response to the pandemic, and rising expenses, Transition House needs support with their mission now more than ever.
